The "morning after pill" — properly called emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) — can be taken after unprotected sex to reduce the chance of an unwanted pregnancy. The earlier you take it, the better it works.
What's available
There are two oral emergency contraceptives available in the UK without a prescription, both of which we supply:
- Levonelle One-Step (levonorgestrel) — can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.
- EllaOne (ulipristal acetate) — can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex.
The pharmacist will talk you through which option is most suitable for your situation. EllaOne is the only option licensed for use up to five days, but Levonelle is suitable in many circumstances earlier on.
How it works
When you come in, ask quietly to speak to the pharmacist. We'll take you straight to the private consultation room (it's not done at the counter) and go through a short confidential questionnaire to make sure the medication is safe and appropriate for you.
Not a regular form of contraception
The morning after pill is intended only for emergency use — when another form of contraception has failed, or when contraception wasn't used at all. Your pharmacist can also point you to longer-term contraception services in the local area.
How quickly can I be seen?
During our opening hours, we will normally see you the same day — usually within a few minutes. If you're worried about time, give us a quick call on the way in.
